According to Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman in the best selling
book, First Break All The Rules, the world's greatest managers spend an
average of four hours per employee per year talking about style and
performance. How much time do you spend with your
employees? What are you talking about?
Performance Discussions are conversations between employees and managers
that focus on doing the right thing at the right time with the right
attitude. More than a hopeless performance management system,
performance discussions focus on creating the environment and the
opportunity for the conversation while leveraging technology for maximum
benefit. Performance discussions reveal strengths as well as
areas for improvement and are an ongoing dialogue as opposed to a once a
year evaluation where the focus is often monetary.
In The Conversation Principle, we learn that discussion determines
development. When you have the right people "on the bus" and
have purpose driven conversations they will begin to self-manage to the
desired outcomes.
